Online marketing is a very competitive and fast pace business in which the smallest errors can take a chunk out of your bottom line.

Before starting your online business you should have a clearly defined plan as to how it will be managed. You'll need to establish certain parameters, conditions, and systems concerning your objectives and the manner in which you'll accomplish them.

Let's have a look at 5 key rules you'll want to adhere to insure yours will be a successful business.

#1 List Building

LIST BUILDING should be one of your TOP priorities as you work to establish your online business. Capturing the contact information of anybody who has shown interest in any of your marketing campaigns is a shrewd business strategy. This presents the opportunity to market to these people again in the future with less cost or effort.

#2 Relationship Building

Start to DEVELOP a RELATIONSHIP after collecting contact information from someone by maintaining periodic contact with them; emailing them with helpful or entertaining information is a good start. By doing this you start to develop a rapport of sorts that breeds a certain familiarity with them. This will make your future marketing efforts more effective.

#3 Auto responder

In order to maintain contact with your list on a regular basis you'll need to have an AUTO RESPONDER set up. The ability to prepare a series of emails that will be sent out on prescribed dates is an absolute must. Not only will it free you up to tend to other components of your marketing plan but it will also insure the timely and reliable delivery of your emails. The scheduling and frequency of your emails is left up to your discretion but you will want to maintain some sort of regulated contact with your list.

#4 Deliver Value

Whether you're emailing interesting content or perhaps offering a free gift be sure it is something of VALUE your list members can appreciate. People will need to know that what you have to offer will help or interest them. In order to make money online people need to be willing to buy from you. If you're giving them free information and gifts they find useful they'll assume products you are selling will hold EVEN MORE value for them. This assumption will motivate them to make the purchase.

#5 Test, Test, then Test again

This last key rule you'll need to follow is both 'boring' and 'very important' if you want a successful business that will make money online for you. You need to TEST what it is you're doing to see what works and what works best. From your emails, to your headlines to the copy on your website you want to know what needs to be improved.

Online marketing is a very dynamic environment that is constantly evolving so what may work one day may not the next. A willingness to continually monitor your marketing plan for any missed opportunities is a must. Your ability to address and adapt to these changes will ultimately lead to the success of your online business.
